Next Tele-Class Starts Oct 19th

The live Tele-Class is back!  After a year long break to finish my dissertation and have a baby, I’ll be offering Joyful Days with Toddlers & Preschoolers again in October/November. This six-week multi-media class is a combination of practical tips and inspiration to help your days go more smoothly.  It uses live phone calls (recorded in case you miss one), readings, … [Read more...]

Shyness Saying Hello

Dear Miss Faith, I am worried about how to deal with my 3.5 year old daughter's 'shyness'.  Whenever we see a new person or even someone she knows (eg bumping into a friend in the supermarket) she hides her face, makes a loud, whingey, grumpy noise, runs to hide and refuses to speak to them. It's hard to see her being so rude when the little girl I know is gregarious and … [Read more...]

Hoarding Toys

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 3yo boy in my play program who is a toy hoarder.  All of his play seems to consist of dumping out toys into a big pile and “protecting” them against anyone else that wants to play with them.  Talking to him about how others feel seems to be getting nowhere.  I’m feeling frustrated and I’d love some new ideas. Dear Early Childhood Teacher, Thanks for … [Read more...]

Book Review: Free-Range Kids

Overall, I really enjoyed Free Range Kids: How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children (Without Going Nuts with Worry) by Lenore Skenazy.  It is aimed at parents with school-aged children, but the message is worthwhile and in my opinion, it’s good to get an early reminder that the world is not as dangerous a place as we might think.  The writing style is light and very humorous, … [Read more...]

Mean Preschool Girls

Dear Miss Faith, My daughter is now 3 1/2 and is having a hard time with simply being kind to those who love her the most. Her cousin/best buddy (who she sees on a daily basis) told her he loved her yesterday and she turned her head and walked away! She has started telling others that they can’t play with her, and she’s even mean to my parents and sister, who love her very … [Read more...]

Night Wakings & Falling Back to Sleep

Dear Miss Faith, My 2.5yo daughter has never been a great sleeper, but lately she’s started waking up multiple times per night.  We’ve been day-weaned for awhile, but she still wants her “mommy pacifier” at night and I usually give in, cause I’m so tired.  But I’m feeling resentful and something needs to change.  We’re both exhausted! Dear Mama,           Big hugs to you!  … [Read more...]

Responding to Ridiculous Demands

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 5yo, 3yo and 1yo.  My challenge is with my 5yo, who sometimes wakes up whiney and just can’t seem to stop, often for 2 hrs or more.  When this happens, nothing is right. For example, this morning he didn’t want me using the muffin tin (said it was his), didn’t like the bowl he was given, wanted cereal after he’d chosen eggs, etc. etc.  Each problem … [Read more...]

Easily Frustrated Child

Dear Miss Faith, My 2yo son is a joy when he's happy, but he gets frustrated really easily and shrieks out of frustration.  It is ear piercing!  I find myself jumping to do whatever it is he wants, all the time, just to avoid that shriek.  I'd like to teach him more patience, but I have no idea how to go about it.  Help! Dear Mama, I'm right there with you on how frustrating … [Read more...]

Welcome, Baby Sophie!

Hello Joyful Readers--  Have you wondered where I've been for the past several months?  Why I haven't been writing new blog posts?  Well, it's because I've been busy having a baby!  My husband and I welcomed Sophia Brandywyne Collins into our lives on January 13th, 2014, weighing 7lbs 7oz.  The birth was intense, relatively fast, and completely amazing.  And having a newborn … [Read more...]
