Biting from Excitement

Dear Miss Faith, I have an intense, energetic little boy who is almost 3. I just don't know what to do when we are playing with other children and he pushes a child down repeatedly, or bites or hits. It often co-incides with being hungry, thirsty, tired or needing a diaper change, but I usually try to be pro-active about those things and am surprised when my first sign is him … [Read more...]

19 Month Old Hits Dad!

Dear Miss Faith Recently our daughter has been hitting dad, blowing raspberries at him, and generally being disrespectful.  It seems totally random; she's often no upset and sometimes even laughs when she does it.  He reprimands her but it doesn't seem to make a difference, and it's really starting to upset my husband.  What do you think could be going on? Dear Mama, When … [Read more...]

Toddlers Swearing

Dear Miss Faith, My son is 2.5 and has started using abusive language (swearing). I have tried a lot of things…I have scolded him for this, I have tried to explain very calmly that these are wrong and bad words, but still no progress. He is in a play-group and his teacher has also complained about this. Please help.   Dear Mama, It can be both frustrating and … [Read more...]

Responding to Ridiculous Demands

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 5yo, 3yo and 1yo.  My challenge is with my 5yo, who sometimes wakes up whiney and just can’t seem to stop, often for 2 hrs or more.  When this happens, nothing is right. For example, this morning he didn’t want me using the muffin tin (said it was his), didn’t like the bowl he was given, wanted cereal after he’d chosen eggs, etc. etc.  Each problem … [Read more...]

Acting Up to Get Attention

Dear Miss Faith, My younger son is 19-months, and has recently become very curious about sticking food up his nose or deep into his ears. I'm concerned about this. The first few times he did it, my husband and I reacted with a sharp, "No!" Now I think he is continuing to do this for the attention, but it's not like I can ignore it because if he gets something lodged up there … [Read more...]

Repeating Questions Over and Over

Dear Miss Faith, My 2 year old repeats herself over and over and over again, to the point that i get soooooo frustrated. I mean i answer her in as many creative ways as i can think of. She kept saying i want a glass of milk, and i said yes when we get home. Then she kept asking– so I kept finding new ways to help her to feel heard, like “you really want a glass a milk eh?” … [Read more...]

Firm But Kind

Dear Miss Faith, I really struggle with the balance between firm and kind. I'm often bad at holding boundaries, and then when I finally do, my kindness seems like it's nowhere to be found. How can I be firm without losing my sense of connection? … [Read more...]

Integrate Your Kids into Adult Activities

Dear Miss Faith, My husband, two boys (ages 3 and 4.5) and I recently moved into an intentional community where there are no other children. The other adults are welcoming but generally don't know what to do, and my boys have started becoming more and more disruptive. I have turned to a very reactive way of parenting, always getting annoyed and whisking them away from adult … [Read more...]

Son is Frustrated that Mom Can’t Understand

Dear Miss Faith, My little guy (2 yrs 4 m) seems to be getting frustrated a lot when he doesn't have the words/ ability to explain what he needs help with. For example, he may want to build a tower with pillows in a certain way and wants me to help, but isn't able to express how he wants me to help. So, I will guess and ask questions and try different ways, and when I don't … [Read more...]
