Adjusting to Baby

Dear Miss Faith,  My 27mo has had lots of changes in the weeks since our new baby was born, with Daddy home for three weeks, then Grandma staying with us.  Now it's back to the "new normal" of me, him, and baby, and we're having a really hard time.  He's testing non-stop, doing things I've asked him not to or that he knows he's not supposed to do; he's also generally sort of … [Read more...]

Dinnertime for Working Parents

Dear Miss Faith, My husband and I both work full time.  My husband picks our 2.5yo daughter up from daycare, and I'm cooking when they get home.  I've noticed that she really needs some time to snuggle on the couch right when she gets home, so I switch off with my husband.  This is all fine.  The problem comes when it's time to go to the table, she doesn't want to--she just … [Read more...]

Collecting & Dumping Toys

Dear Miss Faith, My 2.9 y.o. girl loves to make "nests" in every room of our house. This is something I would normally be fine with, and in fact I recall doing something similar as a child, but my darling girl likes to pile all her puzzles, wooden food, toy trains, stuffed animals, pillows, books, and even the comforters off our beds! I love that she's engaged and playing by … [Read more...]

Biting from Excitement

Dear Miss Faith, I have an intense, energetic little boy who is almost 3. I just don't know what to do when we are playing with other children and he pushes a child down repeatedly, or bites or hits. It often co-incides with being hungry, thirsty, tired or needing a diaper change, but I usually try to be pro-active about those things and am surprised when my first sign is him … [Read more...]

Being Too Rough with Baby

Dear Miss Faith, What can I do when my toddler is rough with the baby (usually unintentionally, but sometimes by-accident-on-purpose)? My impulse is to yell and I know that’s not good and honestly doesn’t really help!  It seems like you often suggest being light-hearted or making things into a game, but that doesn't feel right in this case. I want her to know that it’s … [Read more...]

Sibling Interactions Between Kids & Crawlers

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 9 month old who has just started really crawling and getting all up in her older sister's business. My 2.5 year old has started being really possessive of toys. I try to keep the baby from grabbing things from her when I can, but short of putting baby in a playpen all day I’m not really sure what to do! Dear Mama, Sibling interactions can be a … [Read more...]

Toddlers Swearing

Dear Miss Faith, My son is 2.5 and has started using abusive language (swearing). I have tried a lot of things…I have scolded him for this, I have tried to explain very calmly that these are wrong and bad words, but still no progress. He is in a play-group and his teacher has also complained about this. Please help.   Dear Mama, It can be both frustrating and … [Read more...]

Night Wakings & Falling Back to Sleep

Dear Miss Faith, My 2.5yo daughter has never been a great sleeper, but lately she’s started waking up multiple times per night.  We’ve been day-weaned for awhile, but she still wants her “mommy pacifier” at night and I usually give in, cause I’m so tired.  But I’m feeling resentful and something needs to change.  We’re both exhausted! Dear Mama,           Big hugs to you!  … [Read more...]

Easily Frustrated Child

Dear Miss Faith, My 2yo son is a joy when he's happy, but he gets frustrated really easily and shrieks out of frustration.  It is ear piercing!  I find myself jumping to do whatever it is he wants, all the time, just to avoid that shriek.  I'd like to teach him more patience, but I have no idea how to go about it.  Help! Dear Mama, I'm right there with you on how frustrating … [Read more...]

Baking with Toddlers

Dear Miss Faith, I am working on slowing down and letting my almost-3yo daughter be involved in my tasks, but I'm struggling. Not just because I have trouble slowing down, but also because my daughter has trouble with it too! She often wants to do the next step, but we hadn’t even finished the step we were on, and so i start trying to work faster and faster to stay ahead of … [Read more...]
