Dinner Prep with Preschoolers

Success!  One mom shares: "When I get home from work I’m usually rushing around trying to get dinner together and end up feeling guilty because I’m not giving my boys attention after I’ve barely seen them all day. My 3.5yo used to be a bit more interested in helping me in the kitchen, but I think I turned him off by being too results-oriented. Lately he’s been saying no every … [Read more...]

Peaceful Car Trips

Dear Miss Faith, My 3.5 year old son gets upset when we're driving and I turn or even change lanes, but he has decided that he doesn't want me to.  I've tried being light-hearted and turning it into a game, and I've tried "I'm the driver and I'm in charge," but nothing seems to be breaking the pattern.  What can I do? Dear Mama, This definitely sounds like a who's-in-charge … [Read more...]

Collecting & Dumping Toys

Dear Miss Faith, My 2.9 y.o. girl loves to make "nests" in every room of our house. This is something I would normally be fine with, and in fact I recall doing something similar as a child, but my darling girl likes to pile all her puzzles, wooden food, toy trains, stuffed animals, pillows, books, and even the comforters off our beds! I love that she's engaged and playing by … [Read more...]

3yo Pretending to be Sick

Dear Miss Faith, My 3 yo was really sick last week for about 5 days. During that period some of the rules were broken (like: she watched lots of cartoons… Drunk her chocolate milk with no breakfast… Etc).  Now it’s very hard to bring her back to the “old regime”… She keeps saying that she is sick just because of the benefits she got.  Any advice here?!…. Thanks!!!! Dear … [Read more...]

Help Your 3yo Sleep Alone

Dear Miss Faith, My daughter is 3.5 and very independent during the day, but very clingy/needy at night.  She falls asleep fine, but comes into our room in the middle of the night and nobody gets much sleep after that.  My husband and I have "solved" this by having one of us sleeping in her room each night, but we're ready to be done with this and feel that she could be ready, … [Read more...]

Sibling Interactions Between Kids & Crawlers

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 9 month old who has just started really crawling and getting all up in her older sister's business. My 2.5 year old has started being really possessive of toys. I try to keep the baby from grabbing things from her when I can, but short of putting baby in a playpen all day I’m not really sure what to do! Dear Mama, Sibling interactions can be a … [Read more...]

Shyness Saying Hello

Dear Miss Faith, I am worried about how to deal with my 3.5 year old daughter's 'shyness'.  Whenever we see a new person or even someone she knows (eg bumping into a friend in the supermarket) she hides her face, makes a loud, whingey, grumpy noise, runs to hide and refuses to speak to them. It's hard to see her being so rude when the little girl I know is gregarious and … [Read more...]

Hoarding Toys

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 3yo boy in my play program who is a toy hoarder.  All of his play seems to consist of dumping out toys into a big pile and “protecting” them against anyone else that wants to play with them.  Talking to him about how others feel seems to be getting nowhere.  I’m feeling frustrated and I’d love some new ideas. Dear Early Childhood Teacher, Thanks for … [Read more...]

Mean Preschool Girls

Dear Miss Faith, My daughter is now 3 1/2 and is having a hard time with simply being kind to those who love her the most. Her cousin/best buddy (who she sees on a daily basis) told her he loved her yesterday and she turned her head and walked away! She has started telling others that they can’t play with her, and she’s even mean to my parents and sister, who love her very … [Read more...]

Baking with Toddlers

Dear Miss Faith, I am working on slowing down and letting my almost-3yo daughter be involved in my tasks, but I'm struggling. Not just because I have trouble slowing down, but also because my daughter has trouble with it too! She often wants to do the next step, but we hadn’t even finished the step we were on, and so i start trying to work faster and faster to stay ahead of … [Read more...]
