Hoarding Toys

Dear Miss Faith, I have a 3yo boy in my play program who is a toy hoarder.  All of his play seems to consist of dumping out toys into a big pile and “protecting” them against anyone else that wants to play with them.  Talking to him about how others feel seems to be getting nowhere.  I’m feeling frustrated and I’d love some new ideas. Dear Early Childhood Teacher, Thanks for … [Read more...]

Neediness

Dear Miss Faith, My daughter just turned three and mostly things are fine, but her neediness is draining on me. It feels a bit like there's a hole in her bucket, and I can't fill it up somehow. I'm not sure why there is so much whininess, such a fanatical emphasis on perfection, such passionate insistence on being carried around the kitchen or down the stairs, such a … [Read more...]

Holiday Celebrations with Toddlers

One of the things that many of us love most about holidays are the rituals: doing things the same way each year. I like to define rituals as “connecting activities that are repeated in a rhythmical manner.” The rhythm can be short, or long. It might be a little game that you play at each meal as you settle your daughter into her high chair, or it might be something that you … [Read more...]

Mama Takes a Trip

Dear Miss Faith, My daughter is 23 months old and I'll be leaving her for the first time on Friday. I'll be gone for 4 days. I haven't told her yet because I'm unsure about how much preparation she needs or should have. Can you help me with this? … [Read more...]

Help with Power Struggles

Hi Miss Faith, My son is 2 and I feel like we are in a constant power struggle. I know it's somewhat normal but I hate this, and feel bad about it. I feel like I'm constantly giving him choices but if feels manipulative. … [Read more...]

Engaging Cooperation

Dear Miss Faith, I've been caring for several 2-year-olds, and we've recently had a new 4-year-old boy join us. This 4yo is generally uncooperative, and the littler kids are starting to imitate him. When he gets into an activity he flows creatively with it, but transitions especially seem to be hard. His momma speaks quite angrily to him and I don't want to do that, but he … [Read more...]

Running Away

Dear Miss Faith--My 2 year old is running away from me for everything, and it's causing some problems. Put on socks, shoes, brush teeth, go to school, change diaper, go outside - he runs runs runs! Any ideas? He used to be excited to do all this, and now ... … [Read more...]

Being Firm without Being Mean

I've talked before about how it benefits children when we have clear expectations and firm boundaries, and how it is reassuring to children to know that we are in charge. I've talked about how having regular schedules and doing things the same way each time can help cut down on discipline issues and allow children to develop expertise. But even when we do all of these things, … [Read more...]

Refusing to Speak

Hi Faith, My friend just turned me onto your blog and the timing couldn't be better! I have a 16 month old daughter that has stopped talking! She will grunt and/or whine instead. She said her first word at around 1 year old and added another 5 or 6 words to her vocabulary within the next month or two. But at about 14 months, she stopped talking. She still makes animal sounds - … [Read more...]

Imaginative Journeys for Mundane Tasks

Redbird tells each child to put his cloth in the bowl   Dear Miss Faith, I’ve never before had children that regularly made a fuss but at the moment I look after two brothers (just turned 3 and 4) that get upset about washing hands, having nappies (diapers) changed and having shoes put on. I always give them warning (ie. in a few minutes we can wash our hands … [Read more...]
